TRA Presentations at Rail~Volution 2014 Conference

By late 2016, Bay Area commuters will likely begin to see the first of a fleet of futuristic new BART trains barreling from San Francisco through the upper Peninsula, the East Bay and new stations slated to open in the coming years closer to Silicon Valley in Fremont, Milpitas and Northern San Jose.

TRA President Lorna Moritz and  Chief Operating Officer Francis DeCoste will be speaking at the Rail~Volution 2014 Conference being held Saturday, September 20 through Wednesday, September 24 in Minneapolis/St. Paul. Since 1995, the Rail~Volution conference has been a driving force in the livability movement. Every year people come together in a transit-rich community to participate in workshops, networking events and toolbox sessions.

Fran will be speaking on two panels. "Legacy Systems + TOD", will be at 4pm on Tuesday 9/23. Fran will be discussing the use of air rights to create development opportunities in older cities and transit systems where land is scarce. On Wednesday 9/24 at 10AM he will participate on the panel "Stimulate Investment Using Publicly Owned Property" which is focused on trends in sustainable urban development. Fran will discuss creating transit oriented development (TOD) through rethinking the utilization of surface parking lots surrounding transit stations.

Lorna will be speaking on the topic of transit retail in the session "Riders + Revenue = Rubbish: Managing Concessions and Making Money" at 4pm on Tuesday 9/23. Lorna will give an overview of the risks and rewards of creating a retail concession program on transit systems.

On Tuesday night September 23, Fran will be participating in the "Pecha Kucha Slam" event. This is a social gathering featuring presentations on many subjects related to TOD, sustainability, and transportation, but in a fast moving entertaining format that allows each presenter only 20 slides with only 20 seconds per slide. Fran's presentation will be a slide show illustrating the influence of trains and subway systems on songwriters and musicians, all while performing an acoustic guitar medley of songs about trains. This is something you won't want to miss! For the full Rail~Volution Program click here.

'Archer Station' Will Bring Retail to Former CTA Bus Garage - Transaction handled by TRA

The site of a demolished, century-old CTA bus garage will get new life as a major retail development under a plan OK'd by the City Council. Plans for the 6-acre "Archer Station" development at Pershing Road and Archer Avenue, approved by the City Council this summer, call for four new commercial buildings and 366 parking spaces. The project will be anchored by a 40,000 square-foot L.A. Fitness center with an indoor pool, group exercise classes and child care options. "It will attract folks and be a neighborhood convenience. That's a big seller for a community that's starting to see some opportunity," said Ald. George Cardenas. Click here to read more.
